You’ve seen one of those paintings. The kind that stops you mid-step. Not because it’s loud or flashy (but) because the surface seems to breathe.

That smell hits you first. Linseed oil. Turpentine. A little dust. It’s sharp and old and alive.

I’ve watched people walk into Arcagallerdate’s atrium and freeze. Sunlight hits the walls. Paintings hum. Someone whispers about a brushstroke.

You’ve stood in front of an oil painting before and felt nothing. Or worse. You thought you should feel something, but you didn’t. That’s not your fault.

You walk into a gallery and feel like you’re reading a menu in another language. The white walls. The hushed voices.

Your gallery just hosted a sold-out show. Attendance was great. The reviews were warm. You even got a few serious inquiries. But rent is due next week.

You walk into a gallery and stop dead. That thick impasto on the canvas catches the light wrong (or) right (and) you lean in.
